Jenna Ortega Quits Twitter After Facing Disturbing AI-Generated Images and Harassment

Jenna Ortega, the star of Netflix’s Wednesday and the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel, has opened up about the darker side of her fame, particularly the disturbing experiences she faced on social media. In a candid conversation on The Interview podcast by The New York Times, Ortega revealed her decision to quit Twitter (now X) after receiving a flood of explicit AI-generated images and “disgusting” messages.

Ortega, who began her acting career at the age of 9, described her dismay upon encountering AI technology used inappropriately. “I hate AI,” she stated, acknowledging that while AI has potential for positive uses—such as detecting breast cancer early—its misuse is alarming. “Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No. It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong.”

The young actress likened AI to “Pandora’s box,” emphasizing the irreversible consequences of its misuse. Ortega also recalled her first encounter with online harassment, which occurred when she was just 12 years old. “The first DM that I ever opened myself…was an unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals,” she shared, marking the beginning of a series of troubling experiences.

Ortega explained that she ultimately deleted her Twitter account a few years ago, following the surge of unwanted attention after the success of Wednesday. “It was disgusting, and it made me feel bad. It made me feel uncomfortable,” she said. The decision to step away from social media was part of her journey to protect her mental health and well-being.

Reflecting on her rapid rise to fame, Ortega acknowledged the challenges of managing her mental health in the spotlight. “I’m really working on not being so self-critical…I should be having so much fun right now. So much fun! And I don’t. And I should. And I try to remind myself of that,” she admitted, highlighting the pressure that comes with fame.

Ortega’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of social media and technology on young stars, and her decision to prioritize her mental health serves as an important example for others in similar situations.
