In Nobody Wants This, Netflix’s upcoming rom-com series, Kristen Bell and Adam Brody star as an unlikely couple navigating a whirlwind romance that blends humor, faith, and personal growth. The series follows Joanne (Bell), a popular lifestyle podcaster, as she falls for Noah (Brody), a progressive rabbi in Los Angeles. The show, which debuts on September 26, is loosely inspired by the real-life experiences of creator Erin Foster, who went through her own conversion to Judaism after meeting her husband.
The 10-episode series tackles issues like religious differences, family tension, and career-driven second thoughts. As Joanne navigates her relationship with Noah, she faces challenges from her ex and the potential impact on her career, which thrives on candid stories of her romantic escapades. Noah, on the other hand, must reconcile his romantic involvement with a non-Jewish woman as it threatens both his faith and professional standing within the synagogue.
A Story Inspired by Erin Foster’s Life
The creator and writer of Nobody Wants This, Erin Foster, drew on her own conversion journey for inspiration. Though the show takes creative liberties, including transforming Foster’s real-life husband into a rabbi for the story, the authenticity of her experience shines through in the humor and cultural nuance. Foster originally wrote the pilot with the intention of playing the lead herself but handed the role over to Bell after deciding to focus on motherhood. “I want to have a baby,” she explained. “Acting is not where my head is at right now. I would be so honored if you would take the role.”
Adam Brody on Playing Noah, the Modern Rabbi
Adam Brody, who has a history of working with Bell on projects like House of Lies and CHiPs, was eager to take on the role of Noah. Describing his character as a modern rabbi who is deeply rooted in the contemporary world, Brody found the part relatable due to his own Jewish heritage. Though he was bar mitzvahed, Brody admitted he hadn’t practiced much since. Preparing for the role, he immersed himself in Jewish culture through research, attending synagogue, and consuming books, documentaries, and podcasts.
“I really love the idea of modernizing a rabbi and exploring what it means to hold onto tradition while living in the world of L.A. culture,” Brody shared. “Noah is likable, soulful, and a bit sarcastic — the perfect blend for a rom-com lead.”
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s On-Screen Chemistry
Finding the right Noah took some time, but when Brody was cast, it felt like a perfect fit for both Foster and Bell. Foster remarked on Brody’s unique ability to bring both humor and depth to the character, making him both charming and grounded.
The on-screen chemistry between Bell and Brody was a highlight for the series, according to the cast and crew. Despite their off-screen friendship, the two stars delivered a compelling romantic dynamic. “They have such hot chemistry on camera,” Foster said, adding that they balance each other well with sharp comedic timing and emotional vulnerability.
A Dynamic Supporting Cast
Like any great rom-com, Nobody Wants This boasts a strong ensemble cast, including Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons, Tovah Feldshuh, Sherry Cola, and D’Arcy Carden. The sibling relationship between Joanne and her sister Morgan (Lupe) plays a central role in the series. Morgan’s skepticism of Joanne’s relationship with Noah adds layers of tension, humor, and complexity to the show. “In real life, my sister loved my husband from the start, but in the show, I wanted to explore how a sibling might feel left behind when one finds love first,” Foster explained.
Timothy Simons, known for his role in Veep, shines as Noah’s goofy brother, Sasha, while Stephen Tobolowsky plays Noah’s mentor, the head rabbi of his synagogue. Brody praised Tobolowsky, calling it a delight to work with him after watching him in Groundhog Day with his family. “It was such a treat,” Brody said. “He’s an incredible actor and a joy to be around.”
Looking Ahead to Future Seasons
Though the first season wraps up Joanne and Noah’s romantic arc, Foster has plans for a potential second and third season. “I absolutely want another season,” she said. “I’ve got plans for Joanne.”
The series promises a thoughtful blend of romance, humor, and cultural exploration, all while diving into the complexities of modern love and faith.
All 10 episodes of Nobody Wants This will premiere on September 26, exclusively on Netflix.
