Batman to Become First Superhero on Hollywood Walk of Fame: See Other Fictional Characters with Stars

Citizens of Gotham, rejoice! Batman is officially joining Hollywood Boulevard’s elite as the first superhero to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that the Caped Crusader will be honored with a star during a ceremony on September 26, marking a historic moment for comic book heroes.

Batman’s star will be located on the iconic corner of Hollywood and Highland, right in front of the Guinness World Records Museum. This ceremony will commemorate the 85-plus years since the character’s creation by comic book artist and writer Bob Kane, first appearing in Detective Comics in 1939. Over the years, Batman has become an international symbol of justice, courage, and determination, with his portrayal in countless comics, TV shows, films, and animated series. He will now become the 2,790th star on the Walk of Fame.

The Dark Knight has transcended his origin into one of the great American myths,” reads the announcement from the Chamber. “He is vengeance. He is the night. He is Batman.”

DC’s president and publisher Jim Lee, along with SVP and general manager Anne DePies, will be attending the unveiling ceremony. Batman’s selection as a Walk of Fame honoree is significant for two reasons. Not only is he the first superhero to receive this recognition, but he’s also only the 20th fictional character to ever be honored with a star.

To put it into perspective, out of the 2,780 stars on the Walk of Fame, only 20 belong to fictional characters, representing less than 0.01% of the total honorees. It took the Chamber of Commerce 18 years to award the first fictional character a star, which went to Mickey Mouse in 1978. Since then, several other beloved characters, both animated and live-action, have been immortalized on the Hollywood sidewalks.

Here’s a look at some of the other fictional characters who’ve received stars:

  1. Alvin and the Chipmunks – Honored in 2019 to celebrate the animated trio’s 60th anniversary.
  2. Minnie Mouse – Received her star in 2018, presented by Katy Perry in honor of Minnie’s 90th birthday.

  9. Godzilla – Honored in 2004 as the first fictional character created outside the U.S. to receive a star.
  10. Donald Duck – Received his star in 2004, celebrating over 70 years in film.
  11. Kermit the Frog – Got his solo star in 2002.
  12. Rugrats – The animated babies were honored in 2001 after just 10 years on air.
  13. The Simpsons – The iconic animated family received their star in 2000.

  18. Bugs Bunny – The beloved animated rabbit received his star in 1985.
  19. Mickey Mouse – The first fictional character to ever receive a star, honored in 1978.
  20. Dog Performers – Lassie, Rin-Tin-Tin, and Strongheart, all canine film stars, were honored in 1960 during the Walk of Fame’s inaugural ceremonies.

With Batman blazing the trail, other superheroes like Superman and Wonder Woman may soon follow in his footsteps. Until then, Gotham’s protector takes his place among Hollywood’s brightest stars.
