Green Day Banned by Las Vegas Radio Stations After Billie Joe Armstrong Calls the City a ‘S—hole’

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is facing backlash from Las Vegas radio stations after he made inflammatory remarks about the city during a September 20 concert at San Francisco’s Oracle Park. Armstrong, expressing his anger over the Oakland A’s relocation to Las Vegas, called the city “the worst s—hole in America.” His comments were directed at Oakland A’s owner John Fisher, who announced the Major League Baseball team’s move to Las Vegas earlier this year.

“We don’t take no s— from people like John f—ing Fisher who sold out the Oakland A’s to Las f—ing Vegas,” Armstrong said on stage. “I hate Las Vegas. It’s the worst s—hole in America.”

Armstrong’s harsh words came in response to the A’s planned move to the Las Vegas Strip, where they will eventually play in a yet-to-be-built stadium. The announcement has been met with widespread frustration from Oakland fans, especially since the team will temporarily relocate to a minor league stadium in Sacramento for several years. The move ends the A’s nearly 60-year legacy in Oakland, leaving fans devastated.

During the final Oakland A’s game on September 26, fans chanted “F— John Fisher” in protest of the move, echoing Armstrong’s disdain for both the team owner and Las Vegas.

However, Armstrong’s comments did not sit well with Las Vegas residents and radio stations. In response, rock station KOMP 92.3 and alternative station X 107.5 announced they were pulling Green Day‘s music from their airwaves indefinitely. KOMP 92.3 shared on Instagram, “KOMP 92.3 has pulled any and all Green Day from our playlist. It’s not us, Billie… it’s you. #vegas4ever.”

X 107.5 released a more detailed statement explaining their decision to ban Green Day’s music. “In response to Armstrong’s inflammatory comments, the station is banning all Green Day music, effective immediately,” midday host Carlota announced. “Armstrong has crossed a line with Las Vegas locals. We’re breaking up with Green Day completely. Bye Bye, Billie!”

While Green Day’s last official tour stop in Las Vegas was in 2004, the band’s latest album, Saviors, released in 2023, is still being supported by their ongoing tour.

Billie Joe Armstrong has not publicly commented on the radio ban or the reaction from Las Vegas. However, he posted a tribute to the Oakland A’s on social media, lamenting the impact of the team’s departure on the city and its residents. “Me playing in the sand with my Oakland A’s hat. Must be around 6 years old… the athletics leaving Oakland is devastating. I feel for all the fans and the people that will lose their jobs because of greed,” Armstrong wrote. “Three sports teams have left Oakland in the past 5 years leaving a cultural hole in the east bay hearts and sport. I DO believe that Oakland will come back from this.”

The ongoing friction between Armstrong and Las Vegas radio stations highlights the deep emotions surrounding the A’s relocation and the larger cultural impact of sports teams leaving their hometowns.
