Ralph Fiennes Endorses Cillian Murphy as Voldemort for HBO’s Harry Potter Series

Ralph Fiennes, the actor synonymous with Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter film franchise, has given his seal of approval to the idea of Cillian Murphy stepping into the role for HBO‘s highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series.

When asked about Murphy’s name being floated as a potential Voldemort during an episode of Watch What Happens Live, Fiennes didn’t hesitate:

“Cillian is a fantastic actor. I actually think that’s a wonderful, wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian.”

Fiennes’ Voldemort Legacy

Fiennes portrayed the Dark Lord in four of the eight Harry Potter films, beginning with Goblet of Fire (2005) and culminating in the two-part Deathly Hallows (2010–2011). His chilling performance remains iconic, cementing Voldemort as one of cinema’s most memorable villains.

In 2022, Fiennes expressed enthusiasm about reprising the role if given the chance:

“Sure, of course. No question about it,” he told Variety.

Murphy as Voldemort: A Perfect Fit?

Cillian Murphy, fresh off his Oscar-winning role in Oppenheimer, has proven himself adept at playing enigmatic, menacing characters. From the eerie Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to the ruthless Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders, Murphy has a track record of bringing complexity and charisma to villains.

Murphy and Fiennes will soon share the screen in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the next installment in the 28 Days Later zombie franchise, alongside Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

About the HBO Harry Potter Series

HBO’s series, helmed by Succession producer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, promises to be a faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s books, diving deeper into the storylines fans love. While returning cast members like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are not expected to appear, the series is poised to feature a fresh ensemble of actors.

Rowling herself is an executive producer on the project, which has already generated intense anticipation and speculation, including about who might embody the series’ most iconic characters.

The Future of Harry Potter

If Murphy takes on the role, fans could expect a Voldemort with a sinister edge and psychological depth, fitting for a TV series that may explore the character’s origins more thoroughly than the films.

While casting decisions are still under wraps, the prospect of Murphy as He Who Must Not Be Named has already stirred excitement. Fiennes’ endorsement only strengthens the argument that Murphy could bring something extraordinary to the dark wizard’s legacy.

For now, fans can only imagine how Murphy’s take on Voldemort might redefine one of the most feared villains in literary and cinematic history.
