Miley Cyrus, fresh off a Golden Globe nomination for her original song “Beautiful That Way” from The Last Showgirl, has been left off the Academy’s shortlist for Best Original Song at the Oscars. This surprising exclusion comes despite many industry experts considering the Cyrus, Andrew Wyatt, and Lykke Li-penned ballad a frontrunner in the category.
Cyrus isn’t alone in her disappointment. Lady Gaga’s much-anticipated “Folie à Deux,” created for the Joker sequel, also failed to make the cut. Similarly, Sky Ferreira’s “Leash,” from the Nicole Kidman-starring Babygirl, was left out, despite marking her long-awaited return to music.
Highlights from the Oscars Shortlist
Among the nominees, Diane Warren continues her streak of recognition with “The Journey,” sung by H.E.R. for Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight. Elton John’s “Never Too Late,” from his self-titled documentary, also earned a spot. Notably, Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s musical film, secured two shortlisted songs, “El Mal” and “Mi Camino,” performed by Camille, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross made the shortlist for the haunting “Compress/Repress” from Challengers, while Saoirse Ronan’s Blitz track “Winter Coat” also received recognition, co-written by director Steve McQueen alongside Taura Stinson and Nicholas Britell.
Country Stars and Disney Dreams
The Academy welcomed country music stars like Maren Morris, shortlisted for “Kiss the Sky” from Wild Robot, and Lainey Wilson, recognized for her twangy Twisters anthem “Out of Oklahoma.” Lin-Manuel Miranda, already a decorated songwriter, landed a nod for “Tell Me It’s You,” performed by Aaron Pierre and Tiffany Boone in Disney’s Mufasa.
Snubs and Surprises
Though Wicked has dominated pop culture this season, its iconic tracks “Popular” and “Defying Gravity” were ineligible due to their Broadway origins. Meanwhile, Pamela Anderson‘s praised performance in The Last Showgirl added to the film’s awards buzz, but its absence from the Original Song race may dampen its Oscar hopes.
While Cyrus may have missed out on an Oscar nod, her emotional anthem has already cemented its place in 2024’s cultural zeitgeist. With heavyweights like Diane Warren, Elton John, and Lin-Manuel Miranda in the running, the race for Best Original Song promises to be as competitive as ever.
The Last Showgirl and other shortlisted films continue to resonate, even as the Academy narrows its focus for the big night in 2025.
