Demi Moore Reflects on Risky Roles, from Ghost to 2024’s The Substance

Demi Moore has built her career on taking bold chances, from her iconic role in Ghost to her latest project, the critically acclaimed body-horror film The Substance. In a candid Hot Ones interview, Moore opened up about the uncertainty that accompanied her decision to star in these unconventional projects — and how those risks have defined her career.

Rolling the Dice on Ghost

Reflecting on her experience with the 1990 supernatural romance Ghost, Moore admitted that she initially feared the film might flop.

“It had so many different genres mixed together that, truly, I thought, ‘This could either be amazing or a f—ing disaster,’” Moore told host Sean Evans. “But that’s the kind of juice that says, ‘Step in. Take the risk. Roll the dice. Let’s see what happens.’”

The gamble paid off in a big way: Ghost became the highest-grossing film of 1990, earned five Oscar nominations (winning two), and delivered some of the most iconic moments in Moore’s career, including the famous pottery scene set to “Unchained Melody.”

The Challenges of Ghost

Moore revealed that the emotional depth of Ghost was daunting, particularly as she had to tap into profound grief. “It scared the crap out of me,” she admitted. “In reading the script, I was so overwhelmed at the kind of grief that I was going to have to tap into.”

She also addressed the now-famous moment where her character cried a single tear from one eye: “I didn’t plan that. I have no control over that. That’s just how it happened.”

A Leap of Faith with The Substance

Fast forward to 2024, and Moore is making headlines again for another daring role in The Substance, a genre-blending body-horror film that’s received critical acclaim after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival.

“I thought, ‘This could be something extraordinary or an absolute disaster,’” Moore said, echoing her feelings about Ghost. “But it really means that it was holding something that was worth the risk.”

The Substance, which earned a standing ovation at Cannes, follows in the footsteps of Moore’s willingness to push boundaries and challenge expectations.

Thoughts on a Ghost Remake

While Moore’s pottery-making days are behind her, she’s not opposed to seeing Ghost reimagined. Reacting to news of Channing Tatum’s planned remake, she said, “Look, every story in some ways has already been told. The wonderful thing is the different way things can be reinterpreted.”

However, she also acknowledged that some classics are better left untouched: “Sometimes there are wonderful surprises in reinterpretation, but other times, it’s best to let them be.”

Demi Moore: A Career Defined by Bold Choices

Whether it’s supernatural romance or gory body horror, Moore’s career is a testament to the power of taking creative risks. From the emotional depths of Ghost to the visceral challenges of The Substance, she continues to prove that stepping into the unknown can lead to extraordinary results.
