“They couldn’t live with each other, but they literally died with each other,” says Tabu of her character’s poignant storyline in Dune: Prophecy.
In a shocking conclusion to HBO‘s Dune: Prophecy season finale, the series delivered an emotional blow with the tragic deaths of Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) and Sister Francesca (Tabu), characters whose complex relationship left viewers reeling. The Bene Gesserit’s secretive machinations, familial bonds, and a fateful betrayal set the stage for an unforgettable finale.
A Tragic Love Story
Sister Francesca, introduced in the penultimate episode, became a pivotal character in the narrative. Her unique bond with the Emperor, marked by shared vulnerabilities and their son Konstantin (Josh Heuston), provided rare glimpses into Javicco’s flaws and humanity.
“He allows himself to be vulnerable only with Francesca. You see him up close with all his flaws and insecurities when she is around,” Tabu told Entertainment Weekly. “They’re both carrying so much baggage, and we don’t know why she was made to have this son with him. But what makes it interesting is you’re left guessing, what could they have been?”
A Finale Marked by Betrayal and Sacrifice
Francesca’s death followed Javicco’s tragic decision to take his own life, unable to reconcile his divided loyalties between Francesca, Empress Natalya (Jodhi May), and Reverend Mother Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson). Moments later, Francesca was killed by the Empress in a chilling act of revenge.
“It was very sad. I felt terrible because the Emperor is so in love with Francesca, and he reignited his passion,” Tabu explained. “She came with the intention of helping him, but in that moment, she’s not able to convince Javicco that she did not come to kill him. The feeling of betrayal is so deep, because the love is so strong, that it just takes over all of your senses. It’s very sad for Francesca and Javicco, but I feel like it’s such a strong love story. They couldn’t live with each other, but they literally died with each other.”
The Emperor’s Legacy and Season 2
Showrunner Alison Schapker confirmed that Javicco’s death is final, leaving fans to ponder the political power vacuum in House Corrino. “Mark Strong was a joy to work with, just a tremendous actor and a tremendous human being,” Schapker said during a press conference. “His characterization of this Emperor was brilliant… But yes, I think it’s safe to say that he’s dead.”
With the throne of the Corrino family left in turmoil, viewers know from Dune: Part Two that the dynasty continues with Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken). However, Dune: Prophecy has set the stage for new conflicts and power struggles in its newly announced second season.
As Dune: Prophecy continues to expand Frank Herbert’s legendary universe, its exploration of untold histories, political intrigue, and deep personal drama ensures that the series will remain an essential chapter in the ever-growing Dune franchise. Fans can anticipate more secrets and struggles when the story resumes in season 2.
