Jennifer Lopez, known for her savvy choices, apparently balked at Bruno Mars‘ hefty asking price for a wedding performance during the planning stages of her now-canceled nuptials with former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
Celebrity wedding planner Marcy Blum, who worked on the couple’s wedding preparations, shared the inside scoop during a recent appearance on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast. According to Blum, Lopez had expressed interest in having Bruno Mars perform at her wedding, but the conversation quickly turned when Blum revealed his fee.
Blum recalled saying, “We just worked with him, and he’s five.” When host Michael Bosstick clarified, “Million? Just to perform for the night?” Blum responded, “The night? You get 45 minutes, you get an hour.”
Lopez’s reaction, Blum said, was equally straightforward: “Don’t be ridiculous.”
A Lavish Wedding That Never Happened
Lopez and Rodriguez became engaged in March 2019, and their wedding plans involved discussions of high-profile entertainment. However, the pair never made it down the aisle, announcing their split in 2021 after five years together.
Lopez later rekindled her romance with Ben Affleck and married him in July 2022, though the couple divorced just over a year later.
Advice from the Expert
Blum, a seasoned wedding planner and author of Wedding Planning for Dummies, shared her professional insight into hiring celebrity performers for weddings.
“You would never have a headliner, if you were sane, as the regular entertainment,” Blum explained. “No one wants to do their first dance — or maybe they do, but they shouldn’t — to Coldplay or something. That’s just dumb. You want a band band and maybe a deejay, and then maybe you want 45 minutes of Chris Martin or Elton John or whomever you want. Because otherwise, it’s all about them.”
The Price of Fame
Though J Lo and A-Rod’s wedding never came to fruition, Blum’s anecdotes offer a glimpse into the high stakes of planning celebrity weddings. As for Bruno Mars, his $5 million fee reflects his stature as one of the industry’s most sought-after performers.
Representatives for Lopez, Mars, Rodriguez, and Blum did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, Blum added that she was free to share these details because she was not required to sign an NDA while working with Lopez and Rodriguez.
With her legendary status, Lopez continues to prove that even A-list stars know the value of a dollar — especially when planning a wedding.
