Jude Law on the Dumbledore Line He Created for Fantastic Beasts: “I Just Thought That It Was Very Dumbledore”

Jude Law recently revealed that he contributed a memorable line to the Fantastic Beasts franchise, a line he feels captures the essence of his character, Albus Dumbledore. In a Variety interview, Law shared that he wrote the line, “The fact that everything didn’t go precisely to plan, was precisely the plan,” for his portrayal in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022). With a grin, Law added, “That’s Dumbledore. I wrote this line! I just thought that it was very Dumbledore.”
For Law, portraying Dumbledore was more than just a role; it was a connection to a character he felt an affinity with from reading the Harry Potter books to his children. “He was absolutely the sort of heartbeat of those books. Or, rather, the spirit,” Law said, describing Dumbledore as embodying a profound moral center. “There was something in the heart of Dumbledore — there was something in the spirit of the man that I really liked,” he explained. “Playing him put me in a very good place.”
Law also credited Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling with providing him crucial insights into Dumbledore’s complex character. Rowling shared with him that Dumbledore viewed himself as a “monster” for mistakes he made in his youth, a perspective that, according to Law, added depth to his portrayal. “He was always trying to forgive himself,” Law said, “but I just always felt like he was a good, kind man. And it’s nice playing good, kind men.”
Law’s portrayal of Dumbledore, particularly in The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), was central to the films’ storylines, as Dumbledore tasked Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) and his allies with stopping the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen). Bound by a blood pact made in their youth, Dumbledore and Grindelwald were unable to fight each other, a tragic twist given Dumbledore’s past feelings for Grindelwald.
Law’s creative input and personal connection to the role have enriched his portrayal of Dumbledore, bringing warmth and complexity to one of the Wizarding World’s most beloved characters.
