Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram on Saturday to celebrate Hugh Jackman’s 56th birthday with a heartfelt tribute filled with humor and plenty of Deadpool & Wolverine vibes. Sharing a gallery of photos spanning their long friendship and working relationship, Reynolds made sure the message had both emotional warmth and the playful tone fans have come to expect from the duo.
“I hope we get to do this ’til we’re 90. Happy Birthday, @thehughjackman,” Reynolds wrote in the caption. “A lot of years. A lot of adventures.” This line cleverly nodded to their mutual Deadpool franchise, where Reynolds’ character Deadpool often jokes about Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine well into his old age. In Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released earlier this year, Deadpool sarcastically quips that Disney will keep Jackman in the role until he’s 90, poking fun at the trend of nostalgia-heavy casting in major franchises.
The 16 photos shared by Reynolds featured moments from the set of Deadpool & Wolverine, this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con where they promoted the film, glamorous red-carpet appearances, and even casual shots at Wrexham A.F.C.’s Racecourse Ground — the soccer club that Reynolds co-owns with fellow actor Rob McElhenney. The friendship between Reynolds and Jackman shines through in these snapshots, with the pair’s chemistry both on and off the screen being a key part of their collaboration.
As if the Instagram post wasn’t enough, Reynolds added an Instagram story with another birthday wish, calling Jackman “the one and only Greatest Showman,” a reference to Jackman’s starring role in the popular 2017 musical film The Greatest Showman. This lighthearted nod to Jackman’s wide-ranging talents further underscored the genuine bond between the two stars.
Reynolds and Jackman’s on-screen history dates back to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Reynolds first appeared as Wade Wilson/Deadpool.
