Sabrina Carpenter is embracing her eclectic musical style in her new album Short n’ Sweet. The album, which includes the pop hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” also delves into R&B, disco, and country, showcasing Sabrina’s determination to defy genre limitations.
In an interview with Paper magazine, Sabrina revealed that she was often told by industry professionals to stick to one genre. “When I was younger, I was told by a lot of grown men that I needed to pick a genre, stay in that genre, be that genre and do one thing,” she shared. But Sabrina, who started in the industry as a pre-teen, has always wanted to create music that reflects her multifaceted identity.
The result is Short n’ Sweet, a collection of songs that are sonically diverse but unified by Sabrina’s personal storytelling. “Sonically, all the songs are different, but the lyrical perspective is all Sabrina. It’s all me and it’s all stories in my life,” she explained.
For fans, this means the album has something for everyone. “If your favorite song is ‘Espresso,’ then you’ll have another song that you love [on the album],” Sabrina said. “And if your favorite song is ‘Please Please Please,’ you’ll have another song that you love.” She humorously added, “And if you hate both of those songs, then listen to a different album.”
As Short n’ Sweet marks Sabrina’s sixth album, she’s aware that many listeners are just discovering her now. “I’m grateful for the people for tuning in, whether it be 10 years ago, five years ago, yesterday or tomorrow, in two years. There’s definitely some people that are still not tuned in. I plan on tuning them in,” she confidently stated.
With Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina Carpenter is proving that she can’t be confined to a single genre, and she’s ready to bring more listeners along on her musical journey.
